Novel photopolymerizable LC molecules based on chalcones were synthesized. All of the compounds was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD, Cu Ka radiation). The optical anisotropy of the film was measured by UV polarization spectroscopy. A chalcone is known to form a dimer by [2 + 2] addition reaction when exposed to UV light. It was polymerized by light without the aid of a photoinitiator. Significant changes in the aligned structures are often accompanied, resulting in optical property changes of the irradiated area. In this work, we prepared a LC molecule having two chalcone units. Its photopolymerization was expected to proceed in a stepwise manner. A cyclic product could also form by the reaction between two molecules. |
