In-situ sequestration of CO2 using MDEA-CA System in post-combustion processes |

This study demonstrates the utilization of N-methyldiethanol amine (MDEA) for effective in-situ sequestration of CO2 in presence of carbonic anhydrase (CA) using different calcium salts of chloride (CAC), acetate (CAA) and propionate (CAP) to obtain various polymorphs of CaCO3. CO2 capture by MDEA based on zwitterion mechanism to bicarbonate species facilitate to carbonate ions at higher pH and subsequently treated with Ca2+ to form CaCO3. Here CA enhances the hydration of CO2, it activity has been was quantified using stopped flow spectrophotometer. The CO2 sequestration capacities and enthalpy changes (-ΔHabs) of aqueous MDEA in the presence or absence of CA and/or calcium sources was found to be ~0.80 mol/mol and ~54 kJ/mol, respectively. The sequestration yields was found to vary depending on the nature of calcium sources, were found in the order CAP>CAA>CAC. CAC, CAP and CAA produce pure calcite, vaterite and coexistence of both phases, respectively. |
