Control of Morphology of Polymeric Membranes --- Roles of Phase Separation, Mass Transport and Solution Rheology |
초록 |
Although nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) has been widely used for preparation of polymeric membranes, a clear insight into how membranes form during the process still remains a challenge. The aim of the present talk is to report some recent research results in our laboratory that can shed light on quantitative analysis of the interplay between phase separation and mass transport in NIPS and its relationship with the resulting membrane morphology. The presentation will focus on a point that is usually overlooked in the literature: phase separation may need time to occur, indicating that the times given and needed for phase separation to occur play important roles in the formation of membrane pores. I will discuss how we determined the two time scales mentioned above by using FTIR microscopy. We observed that the time scales were strongly related to the exchange rate of solvent and nonsolvent and the degree of polymer chain entanglement in the casting solution. The knowledge of the time scales can lead to development of suitable methods to control morphology of polymeric membranes. |
