To achieve the development of effective closed photobioreactor (PBR) for mitigating carbon dioxide (CO2) as well as producing high value products using microalgae, we designed a scalable bubble column reactor made from a cost-effective polymer film to enhance areal biomass productivity and CO2 removal efficiency from Haematococcus pluvialis using a natural-gas-fired flue gas. When the single bubble column module was operated under the optimum conditions with a column diameter (D) of 15 cm, H/D ratio of 9:1, and gas flow rate of 0.1 vvm, the reactor volume increased from 0.76 L (D : 10 cm) to 26.9 L, and the closed device maintained the cell growth efficiency without loss of biomass productivity in H. pluvialis. Our advanced module of a plastic thin-film reactor will definitely reduce the scale-up cost of closed PBR systems while enhancing of both the areal biomass productivity and the CO2 removal efficiency from flue gas using microalgae. |
