제목 Improvement in modular scalability of polymeric thin-film photobioreactor for autotrophic culturing of Haematococcus pluvialis
초록 To achieve the development of effective closed photobioreactor (PBR) for mitigating carbon dioxide (CO2) as well as producing high value products using microalgae, we designed a scalable bubble column reactor made from a cost-effective polymer film to enhance areal biomass productivity and CO2 removal efficiency from Haematococcus pluvialis using a natural-gas-fired flue gas. When the single bubble column module was operated under the optimum conditions with a column diameter (D) of 15 cm, H/D ratio of 9:1, and gas flow rate of 0.1 vvm, the reactor volume increased from 0.76 L (D : 10 cm) to 26.9 L, and the closed device maintained the cell growth efficiency without loss of biomass productivity in H. pluvialis. Our advanced module of a plastic thin-film reactor will definitely reduce the scale-up cost of closed PBR systems while enhancing of both the areal biomass productivity and the CO2 removal efficiency from flue gas using microalgae.
