Uniform small iron oxide nanoparticles of ≤ 3 nm were synthesized by the thermal decomposition of iron-oleate complex. These nanoparticles exhibited very low magnetization derived from spin-canting effect, and they have small magnetic moment. The hydrophobic as-synthesized nanoparticles can be easily transferred to aqueous media, and the resulting hydrophilic nanoparticles showed no significant cytotoxicity. They exhibited good T1 contrast effect derived from small magnetic moment and high concentration of surface iron ions with five unpaired electrons. |
