Lactic acid has been widely used in various fields and the demand of lactic acid has been exponentially grown up. In this regard, many studies for effective lactic acid production have been performed, and membrane-based technologies are considered as an effective way to recover lactic acid. In this study, efficient separation process for lactic acid production from fermentation broth is proposed. The overall process includes ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), ion exchange (IEX) and vacuum distillation. Firstly, microbes and large colloidal particles are separated in UF process. Next, a large amount of glucose and divalent ions are separated through NF process, while lactic acid can relatively easily pass through NF membranes. Then, the inorganic ions are removed by ion exchange resin. Finally, concentrated lactic acid with high purity was obtained via vacuum distillation process. |
