An organic modification of pristine clay is essential to improve dispersion and interfacial bonding in polymer/clay nanocomposites. Therefore, in this study, pristine clay was modified with siloxane diamine and it was used to make UV-curable polyester-acrylate/clay nanocomposites. UV-curing of the nanocomposites was investigated by FTIR spectroscopy, and it was shown to proceed rapidly up to 90% conversion within a few seconds of UV irradiation. UV-curing rates of the nanocomposites with organoclay were faster than that of neat polymer system. The physical properties of the nanocomposites were examined by universal testing machine (UTM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and UV-visible spectroscopy. The structures of the nanocomposites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The organoclay improved the physical properties of the nanocomposites by improving intercalative nanostructures of the clay. |
