Carbon dioxide has been well known as an environmentally benign, clean, abundant, and tuneable solvent. In this presentation, we will report new amino acid-based surfactants for use in carbon dioxide, which are CO2-soluble and relatively nontoxic. Among amino acids, glycine, proline, aspartic and glutamic acid have been used to be CO2-soluble surfactants. Their solubilities and ability of microemulsion formation in sc-CO2 have been tested. Some of newly synthesized CO2-soluble surfactants could be used in a number of applications using a water-in-CO2 microemulsion method ; nanoparticle preparation, heavy metal extraction, decontamination of nuclear waste and dry cleaning of silicone wafers in semiconductor process. |
