Hydrogels for wound dressing were made from a carboxymethyl chitosan (CM-chitosan) by gamma-ray irradiation. The physical properties such as gelation, water absorptivity and gel strength were examined to evaluate the applicability of these for wound dressing. CM-chitosan was synthesized from chitosan (Mw=3×105, DDA (degree of deacetylation)=90.8 %) by Hayes's method. Gamma irradiation doses of 50~200 kGy were exposed to a CM-chitosan solution to evaluate the effect of irradiation dose. The concentration of CM-chitosan solution was in the range of 5~15 wt%. Gel content increased as concentration of a solid in a solution increased, and as irradiation dose decreased. Swelling degree increased as concentration of a solid in a solution decreased, and as irradiation dose increased. |
