Polycarbonates(PC) are one of the most important heat resistant engineering polymers. It can be applied in many fields because of excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability, and solvent resistance. However, the commercial PC has been produced mostly by phosgene(COCl2) process which is highly toxic and use copious amounts of the solvent. Recently, the melt transesterification of PC with BPA and diphenylcarbonate(DPC) has become more important because this process is the non-phosgene route. In this study, diols such as BPA, isosorbide, cyclohexanedimethanol(CHDM) and DPC are used for melt polymerization of PC using diverse catalysts. Catalytic activity in melt polymerization process highly depended on the structure of alcohol and basicity of catalyst. We synthesized isosorbide PC(PIC) and several co-PC by melt polymerization and measured properties using GPC, TGA, DSC, IR. Also we made PIC and co-PC thin films to measure Tensile Strength Tester and UV-visible spectroscopy. |
