Agricultural bioresources are being recognized as emerging bioactive materials that can find application in biomedical engineering. Eggshell membrane (ESM), the protein-rich membrane between the eggshell and egg white, has usually been regarded as waste and overlooked. However, its potential is now being highlighted as a new bioactive material due to its unique properties. In this study, we summarize the basic information of ESM and expand on its role in biomedical engineering fields. Also, we suggest some way to apply ESM for biomedical engineering fields and prove the potential to use as a bioactive material for tissue engineering. Specifically, nanomaterials-coated ESM can control the stem cell behaviors and ESM solution-based nanopatterned substrates can promote the bone regeneration as well as cell function. Our finding demonstrates the potential use of these ESM-based functional platforms as a bioactive material. |
