Polyethersulfone-graft-polystyrene sulfonic acid (PES-g-PSSA) was synthesized through atomic transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) catalyzed CuCl4 / 1,1,4,7,10,10-Hexamehtyltriethylenetetraamine (HMETA) in DMSO. 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy show that the grafting method through ATRP was successful and the maximum grafting degree of PES-g-PSSA was 35%. As increasing sulfonate groups in the copolymer, water uptake, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and proton conductivities increased, resulting from enhanced membrane hydrophilicity. Membranes exhibited higher thermal stability up to 350oC, verified by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). A maximum proton conductivity of 0.079 S/cm was measured at room temperature. The IEC value was 0.63 and water uptake was 46.8 wt.%. |
