We demonstrate specific functional superhydrophobic surfaces through the combination of two principal technologies: the sol-gel process of ORMOSIL and electrospinning technologies. In particular, we put forth the preparation of electrospun organic-inorganic hybrid fabrics without post-treatment. Interestingly, our superhydrophobic sheets reveal the highest thermal resistance of all reported superhydrophobic fabrics, although it still remains a great challenge to make superhydrophobic surfaces robustly stable even in intense circumstance. In addition, we found that they may be appropriately employed not only as air filters, but also as oil-water separation membranes. These special surfaces may steer new avenues in diverse areas such as intelligent membranes for liquid mixture separation, anti-wetting coatings for highly efficient heat transfer in heaters and boilers, flame retardants, matrices for cell culture, or selective filtration of particles from air. |
