DCC-activated synthesis of Pt electrocatalysts on multi-walled carbon nanotubes support for methanol oxidation |

Composite electrodes consisting of Pt nanoparticles supported on amidated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Pt/NH2-MWNTs) have been synthesized using the carbodiimide coupling agent. The structure and chemical properties of samples were characterized by X-ray photoelectroron spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The TEM images show that size-similar and quasispherical nanoparticles are highly dispersed along the entire CNT walls. The nanoparticles possess an average diameter of 3.3 nm. According to XPS results, the estimated value of the Pt contained within the samples was nearly 5.8 %. The Pt/NH2-MWNTs displayed higher activity toward CH3OH oxidation than that of the reference. The better catalytic activities can be explained by the high electrochemically active surface area that resulted from the smaller size and excellent dispersion of metal nanoparticles on CNT. |
