Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is one of the most widely used precursor polymers for making high performance carbon fibers (CFs). However, to improve the processability of PAN homopolymer into CFs, AN-based copolymers incorporating methyl acrylate (MA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), vinyl acetate (VA), and itaconic acid (IA) have been investigated. On continuing those efforts, in this study, we synthesized a series of AN-based terpolymers with different VA and IA contents via an aqueous dispersion polymerization technique, investigated their molecular structures, thermal and mechanical properties as potential precursors for high performance CFs |
