Anti-Biofouling Effect of Surface Active Block Copolymer (SABC) Synthesized by RAFT Polymerization |

Coatings derived from surface active block copolymers (SABCs) have been developed for anti-biofouling materials. Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) and poly(glycidyl methacrylate-block-styrene) (PGMA-b-PS) were synthesized by an Reversible Addition Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) method. Then Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was grafted on PGMA-b-PS via the ring-opening reaction of the epoxy groups. This substrate coated by surface active block copolymers (SABCs) showed good performance against protein adsorption as well as a resistance to biofouling. To understand more about surface reconstruction behavior, protein adsorption experiments were carried out with fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA). The fluorescence intensity of the protein adsorbed in the block copolymer surface was compared with that of polystyrene film as a reference. The synthesized PGMA-g-PEG-b-PS film showed much lower fluorescence intensity than that of the polystyrene (PS). |
