Excitatory amino acids are known to induce considerable neurotoxicity in central nervous system in abnormal condition. It has been known that glutamatergic system is involved in the development of neuronal cell death following a variety of traumas including ischemia, hypoglycemia, and epilepsy and certain neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington’s chorea, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and AIDS neuropathology. During the screening for neuroprotective substances against glutamate neurotoxicity using primary cultured neurons, we have isolated novel neuroprotective compounds of microbial origin. In this symposium, we report the isolation, structure determination, and biological activity of new substances. |
