Study on the Temperature Dependence CD and chiral dopant effect on the Intrinsic Chiral Conformation from Achiral Rod-shaped Smectic Liquid Crystal |

Apart from chiral molecules with distinct axial chirality such as binaphthor derivatives, symmetry breaking may not occur in most of molecules which have stable conformations of axially twisted, since flip over to opposite twist senses is easily made at least in a molecular level. Banana-shaped achiral molecules provide a unique system having intirinsic chirality that is formed from achiral compounds, possibly due to its conformation (axial) chirality. Here, we show that two types of simple rod-like achiral molecules containing phenylene ester moiety with alkyloxy chains and phenylene ester moiety with perfluorododecyl group can exhibits the intrinsic chiral induction. It is found that temperature chiral induction arises from smectic phase and develops upon cooling to room temperature, confirmed by temperature dependence CD. Also, we investigated effect of chiral dopant on helical sense of achiral rod-like molecules |
