The sol-gel method has been widely used as an alternative method to prepare a wide variety of applications. A growing field of interest is bioceramics that can be used as implants, fillers or a drug delivery device. The rheological properties of the silica sols and the processing of the sol-gel method for SiO2 fibers are well known. The most common property of the sols in the fiber spinning is a low water-to-TEOS molar ratio. The low water-to-TEOS ratio indicates the formation of linear silica polymers, which is an important factor for the spinnable sols. Especially, the sol-gel method has several advantages such as high purity, ultrahomogeneity, low processing temperatures, and most significantly the possibility to make inorganic fibers with new compositions. In this study, the Ag-containing SiO2 nanofibers electrospun from the solution prepared by sol-gel method are reported. After heat treatment at various temperatures, the structure and morphology of Ag-containing SiO2 nanofibers was observed by FT-IR, SEM and XRD. |
