Reusable photothermal-based antibacterial agent was designed by modifying iron oxide (Fe3O4) surface with catechol-sultone-functionalized poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (C/S-PVP) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) via layer-by-layer self assembly. The core-shell C/S-PVP-PEDOT@Fe3O4 nanoparticle showed high photothermal conversion under near infrared irradiation (NIR), which was effective to trigger photothermolysis of bacteria with almost 100% killing efficiency towards E. coli and S. aureus. Furthermore, C/S-PVP-PEDOT@Fe3O4 nanoparticle provided recyclability after exposed with external magnetic field due to magnetic property of Fe3O4, with excellent photothermal stability and unchanged performance on antibacterial activity even after 3 cycles. Thus, this material offers potential use for photothermal-based antibacterial agent which is rapid, effective, and reusable. |
