Monodisperse polymeric microspheres containing substituted-viologen pendants were prepared and applied to a reflective electrochromic display (R-ECD). According to the substituent types of viologens, various coloration of R-ECD could be achieved within a potential. Alkyl, cyanophenyl, and salicylic acid groups were incorporated to the 4,4'-bipyridine, and then the modified 4,4'-bipyridines were reacted with the chloro groups on the polymeric microspheres by refluxing. The colors of blue (alkyl), green (salicylic acid), and red (cyanophenyl) were exhibited when viologens were transferred to the radical cation state. The morphology of polymeric microsphere preapred by seeded polymerization was monitored by utilizing a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Electrochemical reaction of viologen, and response time of R-ECD were investigated by using a cyclic voltammetry, and a white LED array spectrophotometer in combination with a digital multimeter, respectively. |
