Hydrogels which exhibit an immediate response, such as swelling or shrinking, to the environmental changes are of great interest and application, for example, drug delivery systems. Development of a matrix-type delivery system having pH-sensitivity was attempted with a hydrogel system. The hydrogel, which consisted of acrylic acid (AAc) and methacrylic acid (MAA), exhibited a pH-sensitivity around at basic pH range much better than acidic pH range. The pH-sensitive hydrogel showed reversible swelling/deswelling behavior. Swelling behavior of the hydrogel was determined by gravimetrical method as a function of pH. FT-IR was used to confirm the composition of copolymer portion in the hydrogels. |
