Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomers with acryl end groups were applied to emulsion and dispersion polymerization of styrene as reactive emulsifiers and dispersants in alcoholic media. Stabilizer was synthesized with PEO (Mw. 10,000) and acryloyl chloride. It obseved rate of polymerization and size distribution from various alcohol midea phases, stabilizer concentration, stirrer rate and reaction temperature. The styrene-co-acrylonitrile random copolymer(SAN) was more high conversion than only styrene polymerization at same hour. The particle size and shape was analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), hydrodynamic fractionation (CHDF) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Latex particles of rather narrow size distribution could be obtained in the range of 0.6-1 um with macromonomers. |
