Low-Bandgap Quinoxaline-Based D–A-Type Copolymers: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photovoltaic Properties |

Although P3HT displays excellent charge transfer (CT) and separation properties, further improvements are needed. P3HT has a relatively large bandgap (1.9 eV) that does not cover much of the solar spectrum. Much of the spectral energy is lost by this large difference between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of P3HT (3.2 eV) and the fullerene derivative ( 4.3 eV). One of the most widely used strategies for obtaining low-bandgap polymers is to synthesize an alternating copolymer with electron-rich (D: donor) and electrondeficient (A: acceptor) units in the backbone. We synthesized three classes of quinoxaline (Qx)-based donor–acceptor (D–A)-type copolymers via a Stille coupling reaction. The PCEs of the polymer solar cells based on these copolymers, in combination with [6,6]-phenyl C70 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), were 3.3% [P(T-Qx)], 1.9% [P(BDT-Qx)], and 2.3% [P(BDT-DTQx)], respectively. |
