Bacterial cellulose (BC) hydrogel was modified by incorporating silver nanoparticles via a chemical reduction using a silver salt and a reducing agent. BC hydrogel has been known as a moist wound dressing to treat chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers, pressure sores and venous ulcers. It has the unique ability to moisten dry area and absorb unwanted fluids from the wound, maintaining optimal moist environment for healing the wound. Nevertheless, the high hydration properties of BC hydrogel might result in the multiplication of the bacteria. There are some reports which show that BC and cotton cellulose do not have antimicrobial properties. We introduced silver nanoparticles into BC hydrogel through a simple and benign process. The resulting BC hydrogel with silver nanoparticles exhibited more than 99.99% of antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The process and the results suggest novel directions for antimicrobial wound dressing materials for chronic wounds and burns. |
