Layer-by-Layer (LbL) films have attracted much attention in a broad range of industrial technology. Especially, understanding the mechanical/physical properties of LbL films and controlling those characteristics are very important because the LbL assembled thin films behave quite different from conventional polymers. Among a number of characterization techniques, wrinkling-based measurement is recognized as a straightforward and versatile means to study the mechanical properties of LbL assembled films. In this study, thermally induced instability based on polymer-polymer bilayered system was employed to investigate the thermomechanical properties of LbL assembled films. Young’s modulus of spin-assisted polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEM) was estimated by measuring the wavelength of surface wrinkles generated on the PEM capping layer. Notably, wavelength and amplitude of wrinkled surface can be tuned by the type of outermost top layer or the degree of ionization within the PEM films. |
