The applicability of hybridized system of photocatalysis, electrolysis and sonolysis for the treatment of reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate was investigated with respect to total organic carbon (TOC) degradation and UV absorbance at 254 nm. An iridium oxide electrode together with titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst and UV irradiation was tested. The TOC removal efficiency was approximately 36%. It was believed that feedwater characteristics, specially chlorine concentration, affected the oxidation of organics. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) dosed helped increase the oxidation rate achieving a significant TOC removal of (~56%). |
