Monodisperse polymeric microspheres containing different functional groups were prepared, and applied to the reflective electrochromic display (R-ECD). To introduce the benzyl, alkyl and carboxylic groups on the particles, chloromethylstyrene (CMS), chloropropene (CP) and acrylic acid (AA) were incorporated as a 2nd monomer during the seeded polymerization. Then the functional groups were reacted with 1-heptyl-4-(4-pyridyl)-pyridinium bromide (1-hppy) by refluxing in toluene for 4hr. Switching behaviors of R-ECD were significantly affected by the dipole moments of functional groups (inductive effect). Morphologies and functional groups on the microspheres were confirmed through a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), respectively. The electrochemical properties, coloration, response time, and bistability of the R-ECD were also examined. |
