Novel electrochromic devices were prepared by using viologen-modified polymeric microspheres. Chloromethylstyrene (CMS) and allyl chloride (AC) were employed as a second monomer and swollen into the monodisperse seed particles through seeded polymerization process. And then the chloro groups introduced on the polymeric microspheres were reacted with 1-heptyl-4-(4-pyridyl)-pyridinium bromide (1-HV) by refluxing in toluene for 4hr. The morphology and 1-HV incorporated on microspheres were confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), respectively. From cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement, the devices showed good electrochromic properties, color changing and bistability. Depending on the nature of functional groups induced on the microsphere, the coloration, switching time, and bistability of device were affected. |
