Owing to the silanol groups on the surface, the fumed silica is hydrophilic and exhibits a high surface energy, which may have an adverse effect on the dispersion in non-polar polymer. Thus, in order to reduce the surface energy and hydrophilic properties, the silanol groups of fumed silica have been chemically modified. In the present study, the fumed silica was modified using γ-glycidoxy propyl trimethoxy silane. Then, the silane coupling agent-treated silicas with glycidol groups were reacted using diethanolamine. Polyurethane-silica nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization from PTMEG, MDI and 1, 2 or 3 wt% silane coupling agent-treated nanosilica. The properties of polyurethane-silica nanocomposites were investigated with FE-SEM, DSC, TGA and UTM. The results will be presented in detail. |
