Ionic transport in typical polymer electrolytes is highly coupled to segmental motions of the polymer backbone which severely restricts cation mobility as the glass transition temperature is approached. One approach to overcome this limitation is to incorporate liquid crystallinity into the system. It is clear that the conductivity of these liquid crystal polymers does not “freeze out” as Tg is approached, but instead varies in an Arrhenius fashion over a temperature range inclusive of Tg. We will interpret this remarkable new pattern of behaviour in terms of activation volumes. |
