Stretchable Electroadhesion using Liquid-Metal Subsurface Microelectrodes |

The presentation describes an approach to generate electroadhesion by embedded subsurface liquid metal-filled microchannels. The structures are stretchable and soft due to the liquid nature of the metal. The electroadhesion strength can be tuned by varying the voltage and geometrical dimensions of the electrodes and thickness of elastomer between the electrodes and substrate. In addition, the use of liquids provides intrinsic enhancement by the surface stresses caused by the capillary pressure in liquid metal-filled microchannels. Stretchable electroadhesion performances can also be enabled by soft and stretchable nature of the liquid electrodes. The use of liquid metal electrodes for electroadhesion may enable exciting applications in ultra-stretchable and soft devices due to its intrinsic deformability and the unique fabrication methods. |
