A novel polybenzimidazole (PBI), poly[2,2’-(2-benzimidazole-p-phenylene)-5,5’-bibenzimidazole] (BIpPBI), can be obtained by the introduction of a bulky basic benzimidazole side group on PBI backbone. The presence of the additional benzimidazole side group attributed to solubility in organic solvents, acid content, acid retention capability, and proton conductivity in this new class of proton-conducting membrane. When compared to poly[2,2’-(m-phenylene)-5,5’-bibenzimidazole] (mPBI), the most commonly used polymer for high-temperature fuel cell applications, BIpPBI membrane was found to improve solubility in organic solvents, acid content (above 80 wt.%), acid retention capability, and maximum proton conductivity (0.16 Scm-1 at 180 oC under anhydrous conditions) than mPBI membrane without any loss of desired thermal and mechanical properties. |
