Synthesis and Characterization of Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether sulfone) Containing Photocrosslinkable Functional Groups for Fuel Cell Membrane |

In spite of good conductivity at humid condition and chemical stability of Nafion, its applicability has been restricted because of their low modulus, reduced conductivity at temperatures above 80°C, high methanol permeability and cost. In this study, a series of the high molecular weight sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) were synthesized by direct copolymerization and SPAES was additionally crosslinked with chalcone moieties by UV irradiation. The structure of the monomer and polymers were characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR spectra and the properties of the crosslinked SPAES membrane was characterized by mechanical property, water uptake, proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and fuel cell performance. As a part of results, the crosslinked SPAES showed better mechanical property, lower water uptake than corresponding uncrosslinked one, while reasonably high proton conductivity was maintained. |
