Role of carbon substrates in RuO2-carbon composite electrode for electrochemical capacitors |

Carbon materials having a variety of specific surface areas and electrical conductivities were examined for the substrates of RuO2-carbon composite electrodes for electrochemical capacitors. To fabricate the RuO2-carbon composite electrodes, RuO2 was electrochemically deposited onto activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanofibers, respectively, by cyclic voltammetry. Electrochemical analyses exhibited that the higher electrical conductivity of the carbon substrate, the better electrochemical performance of the electrode, especially at fast charge-discharge rate. For instance, the shape of cyclic voltammogram got close to a rectangular shape, showing the specific capacitance of > 1,000 F g-1 at slow sweep rates and the decrease in the specific capacitance at fast discharge rates was diminished. The specific surface areas of the carbon substrates influenced little. |
