We introduce an effective method to produce uniform poly(ether imide) (PEI) microspheres via phase separation behavior of polymers from homogeneous solutions. The PEI microspheres were obtained by dropwise addition of a precipitant that was an aqueous solution of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a stabilizer into a dimethylacetamide (DMAc) solution of PEI and PVA. The size and size-distribution of PEI microspheres could be precisely controlled by changing the concentration of PVA and PEI, stirring time and solution temperatures. We measured shape, size and size-distribution of PEI microspheres via scanning electron microscope (SEM). To confirm applications of selective laser sintering (SLS) process, we measured Hausener numbers indicating flow properties of PEI microspheres. Also, thermal and mechanical properties of the microspheres were measured by performing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and mechanical tests. |
