Reverse osmosis membranes containing carbon nanomaterials for water treatment |

Cross-linked polyamide membranes are widely used in the commercial reverse osmosis (RO) systems because they offer a combination of high water permeation flux and high rejections of the salt. However, the polyamide membranes used in the RO systems have several disadvantages such as low fouling and low chlorine resistance, which shortens membrane lifetime and reduces the membrane performance such as water permeation flux and salt rejection. Recently, we prepared a series of RO membranes using functionalized carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene oxide (GO) having different degree of functionality and size and length by changing the chemical treatment conditions. In the symposium the preparation of these polyamide nanocomposite membranes containing the carbon nanomaterials and the much improved membrane performances including water permeation flux, fouling resistance, and chlorine resistance will be demonstrated. |
