In recent years, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging modality for the treatment of cancer due to their fewer side effect and toxicity than chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Rare-earth-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have great potential for near-infrared (NIR) light activated PDT applications. PDT based on UCNPs can generate singlet oxygen, via the excitation of a photosensitizer (PS) using NIR irradiation which has deep penetration depth and low toxicity in tissue. In this study, several core-shell structured UCNPs were prepared by thermal decomposition method. The surface modification of UCNPs was conducted for PDT and bioimaging applications. In addition, PDT effects of the UCNPs-based nanocarrier were investigated using two types of cancer cell lines. |
