Block modification of SBS copolymers with polar functional groups and their effects on the interaction with an organically modified montmorillonite |

Polymeric nanocomposites were prepared from styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) block copolymers and an organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT). Polyethyleneglycol modified polydimethylsiloxane (PEG-PDMS) was synthesized and used for the modification of SBS copolymers. Butadiene blocks in SBS copolymers were modified by PEG-PDMS via hydrosilylation with the amounts of 1 to 5 mol% of butadiene blocks. Modified SBS copolymers were melt intercalated into OMMT to prepare nanocompoaites, using Brabender mixer and hot press. Thermomechanical properties of the nanocomposites were investigated and demonstrated that the glass transition temperature of modified SBS nanocomposites were higher than that of unmodified ones. It was attributed to the higher interaction between polymer and OMMT by introducing polar functional groups to the butadiene blocks in SBS. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments on polymer/OMMT composites revealed that the intercalation of polymer chains leads to increase in the spacing between OMMT interlayers. We also attempted to prepare nanocompoties of modified SBS with other inorganic nanoparticels and the results will be presented.
