Carboxyl Charge Measurement of Cellulose Nanofibrils Isolated by TEMPO-Mediated Oxidation Using Conductometric Titration |

This study discuss the measuring method of carboxyl charge on the surface of cellulose materials isolated by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation followed by three different ultrasonication times such as 20, 40 and 60 min. TEMPO-mediated oxidation provided two fractions of cellulose materials: cellulose micro-fibrils (CMFs) as sediment and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) as supernatant. The carboxyl surface charge of CNFs was greater than those of CMFs, but it did not change with the sonication time. These results indicates that the sonication treatment renders new carboxyl charge on the surface of CNFs. |
