Cholesteric liquid crystals are one of the widely used liquid crystals in display industry. This is because they can make a circularly polarized light and this feature produces a lot of applications such as reflective films, color filter and E-paper. Since cholesteric liquid crystal phase was made simply by mixing a chiral dopant into nematic liquid crystals, a proper choice of chiral dopant becomes very important. In order to make cholesteric liquid crystals, we have synthesized new chiral dopants containing sorbide or mannide core and mixed them with LC242, purchased from BASF. The physical properties of chiral dopants were characterized with DSC, XRD, POM and UV-Vis instruments. In this study, the effect of chiral center structure of chiral dopants on their helical twisting power (HTP) was investigated. |
