Organic Amphiphilic Fullerene Surfactant for Vertical Alignment Layer of Liquid Crystals |

The molecular self-assembly of nanomaterials has been attracted for arrangement of liquid crystal (LC) because of surface energy minimization by phase-separation and migration on the solid substrates from LC medium. Here, an amphiphilic fullerene surfactant (C60BP) newly is designed and synthesized for the automatic construction of vertical alignment layer on the substrate. The C60BP is consisted of mesogenic cyanobiphenyl moieties for good interaction with LC medium and control of alignment and a fullerene nanoatom for inducing phase-separation from LC medium. The C60BP is self-assembled on the surface and form the monolayered protrusions. The constructed protrusions create the automatic vertical molecular alignment on the macroscopic length scale.
