Effect of chain length of alkyl amine for polypropylene/functionalized graphene nanocomposites |

A composite materials consisting of conductive fillers and polymer becomes electrically conductive as the filler content exceeds a certain critical value, which is generally attributed to percolation phenomenon. Graphene, an allotrope of carbon and related materials have attracted considerable attention due to their high structural strength, excellent electrical properties. In this study, Graphene nanosheets were prepared by complete oxidation of graphite followed by thermal exfoliation and reduction and then functionalized with various alkyl amine. Polypropylene/functionalized graphene composites were prepared by melt compounding. Transmission electron microscopy observation indicated that functionalized graphene nanosheets exhibited a uniform dispersion in PP matrix. The incorporation of functionalized graphene greatly improved the electrical conductivity of PP, resulting in a sharp transition from electrical insulator to semiconductor with a low percolation threshold value. |
