World crude oil reserve is becoming depleted and it was reported that petro-oil production will be sharply decreased from 2015 but more than half of worldwide energy consumption still depends on petroleum and natural gas. The most expected solution for global energy problems is renewable energies among them biodiesel is one of the best alternatives of petro fuel and microalgae are potentially powerful source to produce lipid, the raw material of biodiesel. To make biodiesel efficiently from microalgae, development of good transesterification method is important. Generally, biodiesel production method is composed of two steps process, lipid extracting from biomass is first step and transesterification from extracted lipid to biodiesel is second step. The process skipping lipid extraction step has advantage to reduce unit operations. Dunaliella species belonging to microalgae are known as massive lipid producers. This is a report on the direct transesterification from whole cell of Dunaliella sp. without previous lipid extraction. The biodiesel was successfully produced from whole cell of Dunaliella sp. by direct transesterification and the production yield of biodiesel was fairly good. |
