In the present study, the toxic effects and biodegradability of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide were investigated using activated sludge. The toxicity is expressed as the inhibition of respiratory activity of microorganisms present in activated sludge. The ionic liquid was applied in concentrations ranging between 10 μM and 0.1 M. It was observed that only the highest concentration yielded a significant decrease in respiration rate compared to the control. Considering the biodegradation, the data obtained showed that the alkylimidazolium salt was metabolized through the sequential oxidization in different positions of the alkyl side chains. High-performance liquid chromatography and mass-spectrometry analyses demonstrated that this biodegradation led to the formation of 1-(1-hydroxybutyl)-3-methylimidazolium, 1-(3-hydroxybutyl)-3-methylimidazolium, 1-butyl-3-hydroxymethylimidazolium, 1-methyl-3-(3-oxobutyl)imidazolium, butylimidazole and methylimidazole. |
