Synthesis of sulfonimide based proton exchange membranes for fuel cell applications |

Sulfonimide groups have higher acidity than sulfonic acid group. So N-acryloyl-N´-flurosulfonylurea acid monomer based on sulfonimide was synthesized from flurosulfonyl isocyanate and acrylamide. Free radical colymerizations of the monomer were carried out with methyl methacrylate & styrene using azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). The proton exchange membranes were cast from solutions of the resulting copolymers. The membranes were mechanically strong, flexible, and transparent. The structure of the synthesized monomer and membranes were investigated by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The membranes exhibited high proton conductivities under humidifying conditions. Membrane properties were studied with regard to ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, dimensional stability and Fenton test. Surface morphology was also assessed by atomic force microscope (AFM). |
