In this work, the influence of acid-base treatments on mercury adsorption of activated carbons (ACs) was studied. The surface chemistry of ACs has been characterized by using FT-IR, pH measurement, Boehm’s titration method, and SEM. The adsorption behaviors of mercury ions from aqueous solutions of mercury chloride have been confirmed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. As a result, acidic ACs showed a higher mercury ions adsorption capacity than that of basic activated ones. This was probably due to the increasing of acid-base interactions betweenACs surfaces and mercury ions. |
