Fabrication of functional supramolecular structures through the self-assembly of small molecules continues to be the subject of keen interest. Moleculary-assembled monomers having polymerizable units often provide additional merits to the resulting supramolecules such as enhanced stability, defined three dimensional structures, facile encapsulation of guest molecules as well as chromogenic function. Current investigation focused on the effect of chirality on the morphology of polydiacetylene supramolecules. Dipeptide (Alanyl-Alanine)-containing diacetylene monomners were prepared and morphologies of resulting supramolecular structures were investigated. Interestingly, only left-handed helix ribbons were observed when an enantiomerically pure diacetylene monomer derived from LAla-LAla was used. Further investigation with DAla-DAla confirmed that the helix control of polydiacetylene supramolecules could be possible by using enentiomerically pure diacetylene monomers. |
