Recently, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has been conducted to apply biocompatible polymers for drug delivery systems and cancer cell-killing embolic materials. Water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion system was useful to prepare drug-containing nanoparticle. In this study, for producing high molecular weight PVA nanoparticles, vinyl acetate was bulk-polymerized using 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethyl valeronitrile). And the corresponding atactic PVA (a-PVA) with the biocompatibility was obtained by the saponification of poly(vinyl acetate) polymerized. High molecular weight a-PVA nanoparticles were prepared by homogenizer using W/O emulsion system. We investigated the effect of the processing parameters associated with homogenization on the size of the emulsion droplets. For the measurement of size distributions of particles prepared, a laser diffraction HELOS/BF(Sympatec GmbH, Goslar Germany) was used. Furthermore, morphologies of obtained a-PVA gel nanoparticles were observed using optical and scanning electron microscopes.
