Stem cells have been used to regenerate tissues and organs damaged by injury or disease for more than three decades. Recently, researchers have reported the plasticity and multipotency of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). However, These are the most difficult operations and essential factors for the clinical application. In this study, we demonstrated the multipotency of periosteum-derived progenitor cells and umbilical cord blood (UCB)-MSCs as alternative cell sources and their regenerative capacity in articular cartilage. In addition, for the expansion of UCB-derived CD34+ cells, optimal culture condition and novel culture systems were investigated. |
